Strengthening Families

Strengthening Families

Strengthening Families is a comprehensive, 14-session, family skills training designed to develop and strengthen parents’ confidence in their ability to supervise, support and communicate with their children. Each two and a half hour session includes family meal time, separate group meetings for parents and children, and large group interaction among all family members participating in the program.

The Strengthening Families program helps parents and children as follows:

• Establish family routines
• Learn communication skills
• Identify and institute rules that support the family’s ability to thrive with all members involved in its success.

The parents’ sessions are designed to help parents learn to increase desired behaviors in children by using attention and rewards, clear communication, effective discipline, substance use education, problem solving, and limit setting. The children’s sessions are designed to help children learn effective communication skills, understand their feelings, improve social and problem-solving skills, resist peer pressure, understand the consequences of substance use, and comply with parental rules.
