Second Step (Grades K-1)

A Violence Prevention Program

The Second Step lessons for Kindergarten and first grade begin with Skills for Learning and Listening Rules, which set the stage for future academic success and later lessons on identifying feelings, managing strong emotions, solving problems, and getting along with others. The sessions include interactive lessons incorporating Brain Builder games, and partner work that keeps the children engaged and helps them practice their skills. Impulsive Pup and Slow-Down Snail puppets encourage children's participation, and Be-Calm Bunny helps students wait for their turn to speak.

Students will learn how to interrupt politely, how to avoid the conflicts such as sharing, line leaders, and taking turns. Role playing and the use of picture cards create the atmosphere of cooperative learning and opportunities for practice of new skills. This program is offered as a series of six sessions of approximately 30 minutes.
